This year's list features 27 individuals from the photo world -- photographers, photo bloggers, critics, curators, editors and publishers. Coming in at around 200 titles, this year's Best Books list is reflective of the diversity of our contributors.
It's no surprise that there wasn't a huge amount of agreement this year -- though I think that has more to do with the shear diversity and number of titles out there than anything else. If there was one thing that our contributors can agree upon, it's the importance and vitality of the indie photobook. And it wasn't just from the contributors who specialize in indie photobooks, they were given attention on nearly every list. The rise of self-publishing avenues is changing the way the art world functions, more palpable in the photo world than anywhere else. This Best Books of 2010 list is clear proof of that -- anyone can be a publisher these days, and many are doing a very fine job of it.
Though we do our best to stay ahead of the curve, Best Books is always a process of discovery for us at photo-eye. We've been excited to find so many great new books in researching this year's list, but there's no denying that the number of titles is large and perhaps a bit daunting to parse. So over the next few weeks here on the blog we'll be spending some time taking a closer look of a number of these titles. If there's any book you'd like to see a little more information about, let us know and we'll do what we can to try to explore it with you.
We hope that you'll also take this opportunity to share your picks for the best photobooks of 2010 in the comments section of this post. Let us know what you think of the selections! Are there any amazing books that our contributors missed? We're excited to hear what you think!
