photo-eye is pleased to host David Chickey, founder of Radius Books, and Gordon Stettinius, founder of Candela Books + Gallery, for a presentation about photobook publishing. Gordon Stettinius will be Skyped in from New York. Chickey and Stettinius will use two of their recent publications Chris McCaw’s Sunburn (Candela, 2012) and Sharon Harper’s From Above and Below (Radius, 2012) as examples of the publishing process while expanding on the factors involved in publishing.

David Chickey is a book designer and curator with over 20 years experience in the art business. A graduate of UNC, Chapel Hill and Sussex University, his experience includes work with both the museum and the gallery world — including the St Louis Center for Contemporary Art, the Allene Lapides Gallery, and Sotheby’s, London. He is currently co- owner of Skolkin+Chickey which provides a full range of design and packaging services to artists, museums, and publishers.

Gordon Stettinius is a photographer and artist and educator living in Richmond, Virginia. Stettinius founded Candela Books in 2010 in order to publish the work of New York photographer Gita Lenz. He opened Candela Books + Gallery in 2011. The thinking at the time was that the book publishing was bringing so many interesting photographers and artists to Candela’s attention but unfortunately there are only so many books a small and independent publisher can manage at a time. So, the decision was made to start exhibiting work related to book projects and to do so along with exhibitions by other notable, nationally recognized artists and photographers. The gallery is located in a renovated building in the Downtown Arts District of Richmond, Virginia.

The photo-eye Gallery is located at 376 Garcia Street, Suite A, Santa Fe, NM and is open Monday through Saturday, 10am to 6pm.
