"I make photographs worthy of human spirit. To understand my work, the viewer agrees to enter a world of belief and wonder, of time and timelessness, of hope and fear in order to confront the heights and depths that form our lives. It is a privilege and great responsibility to devote to art. My vocation is to create totally personal and unique art, which is the transformation of my vision into photographs. I make the work in order to create contemporary images of human history. The subject of my photographs is the human soul.” -- Joel-Peter Witkin, September 2012
