Book of the Week: A Pick by Jim Stone

Book of the Week Book of the Week: A Pick by Jim Stone Photographer and educator Jim Stone selects We Shall by Paul D'Amato published by DePaul Art Museum as photo-eye Book of the Week.

We Shall. By Paul D'Amato.

This week's Book of the Week selection comes from photographer and educator Jim Stone who has selected We Shall by Paul D'Amato published by DePaul Art Museum.

"Produced as an exhibition catalog, Paul D'Amato's We Shall follows his 2006 book, Barrio. Both deserve more attention. D'Amato is a photographer's photographer. I study D'Amato's work to inspire my own. As a teacher, I show his photographs to students every semester (and have for twenty years) as examples of nearly everything a photographer should pay attention to. Feel his deep regard for and incisive understanding of his subjects, look at the brilliant way he structures each image and how he uses light and color, imagine yourself as completely immersed in the lives of others, devoting years to a neighborhood. I've seen many photobooks over the years in which an inventive style and high production values create a semblance of substance. This is a book with more classic sensibilities; the vessel does not intrude on its contents. It is worthy of repeated — careful — readings."—Jim Stone
