"When someone moves on from this life, it is hard to know how to comprehend his or her passing. When the physical body is no more where does the spirit go? In Jordan Sullivan’s After the Funeral we examine images composed in a field of wildflowers, close to his grandmother’s house, created after her funeral service.

Impressionistic in nature, Sullivan utilizes a wide color palette to create his own sort of aura picture. Layering colors and flowers with his camera like a plein air painter on a sunny day. Perhaps, he is harnessing his grandmother’s spirit one last time. Hoping to find a sign from the universe, a last communication from her before she’s really gone. While the images in After the Funeral are beautiful, decadent, and painterly they also act as a universal trigger for those who know what it feels like to lose someone.

Funnily enough, my mother’s maiden name is Sullivan and my grandmother passed away not to long ago. So this book hits eerily close to home. In a way, I can’t help but feel as though these images are what Sullivan would want his grandmother to see when she moves beyond earthly life. A field of flowers full of color so vivid you can smell their fragrance. While it’s power is hidden in its subtlety After the Funeral is a wonderfully executed work that uses the photograph as a tool to process grief and comprehend feelings that words can often not explain." — Christian Michael Filardo
