A View From the Bridge © Tom Chambers, 2012 |
Tom Chambers' most recent photographic series has taken him to Italy where his signature dream-like photomontages were informed by the unique quality of light in the Tuscan region and engage in its metaphoric properties. In this post, Chambers shares with us a bit of the thought behind the final two images in the Illumination series.
"My Illumination series reflects my respect for the power of light in exposing possibilities. This series of photomontages developed after an awe-inspiring journey to Florence, and then a later visit to Venice. The Grand Canal of Venice is ordinarily bustling with the traffic of cargo boats, gondolas, traghetti, and vaporetti. View from the Bridge reveals a young woman in a solitary moment of the early morning stepping, into the light and new adventures. On the other hand, in Vissi D’Amore a young woman ponders her fate in the darkness covering the canal, as light from the nearby houses offer some hope. The Puccini opera is a favorite of mine, and I resonate with the words of Tosca, 'Vissi d'arte, vissi d'amore' (I lived for art, I lived for love)." -- Tom Chambers
