The Bungalow. By Anouk Kruithof. Onomatopee, 2015. |
"Anouk Kruithof has already proven herself to be an exciting and brilliant bookmaker, so it should come as no surprise her latest, The Bungalow, doesn't disappoint. Drawn from the vernacular photography archives of Brad Feuerhelm, The Bungalow bends, twists, and contorts Feuerhelm's images in dazzling and exciting ways. While many artists appropriate vernacular photographs into their work, it's rare that they transform them to such an impressive degree. Printed on a variety of different papers and organized loosely into five chapters, The Bungalow is not only a kaleidoscopic peek into one collector’s obsession but also a playful exploration of our continually evolving image culture both on screen and off.
Jasper John's once wrote in his notebook, 'Take an object. Do something to it. Do something else to it.' Heeding John’s advice, Kruithof has pushed these images to their breaking point and in doing so, set a new bar for dealing with appropriated images. The Bungalow is a book that will vex, delight, and inspire in equal measure."—Adam Bell
