Marvelous Tales of Black Ink. By Nobuyoshi Araki. Morel Books, 2015. |
"For a photographer who has had upwards of 400 books of his work published, it's a rare thing to become excited by the release of a new title. Nobuyoshi Araki's Marvelous Tales of Black Ink, recently published by Morel is, however, something of an exception. By no means new territory for the Japanese photographer, the immaculate black and white images are of his staple subject — women clad tradition clothing or nude and bound in a familiar way. Where this book breaks free a little perhaps, as well as its inclusions of beautiful floral still lives, is through the coy phrases drawn by hand over each image i.e.. 'sex-lovers will collapse one day.' Simply designed with a subtly embossed dust jacket of thick white card and presented at a pleasingly large size that will defy even the most accommodating book shelf, I would highly recommend it." —Gregory Barker
