photo-eye Gallery is pleased to announce Michael Kenna: Il Fiume Po (The River Po), an online solo exhibition by English photographer Michael Kenna. This exhibition corresponds with Kenna's recent photobook Il Fiume Po, published by Corsiero Editore.

The delicacy of Michael Kenna’s unique photographic sensibility becomes particularly apparent in his series Il Fiume Po. Kenna's atmospheric images present the natural and man-made surroundings of the River Po through a captivating perspective that offers both mystery and stillness.

The photographs in this series contain an exact balance between the ethereal and corporeal. Through Kenna's subtle manipulation of relationships between airy white and rich black tones, the mirror-like surface of the river, overcast skies, and man-made objects, this body of work embodies unexpected visual contrasts that are of an almost otherworldly beauty.

Michael Kenna: Il Fiume Po (The River Po) opens online Saturday, April 3. It uses photo-eye’s revolutionary new VisualServer X website builder and is the fourth in photo-eye's series of online exhibitions.

"The Po is ancient and I am only a fleeting visitor. I have always loved the Heraclitus quote that says No man has ever stepped in the same river twice; it is not the same river and he is not the same man. I like to apply these concepts to photography. Nothing, myself included, is ever the same. The river flows whether I am there or not, but I think there is some sort of energy exchange in every encounter. The Po has certainly influenced and changed me. I'm not so sure how I changed the Po, other than photographing it and exhibiting the works."

Michael Kenna, Ratcliffe Power Station, Study 18, Nottinghamshire, England, 1984, Gelatin-silver print, 6x9″ image in 16x20″ mat, $2500

Michael Kenna, though now known internationally as a master photographer and darkroom printer, once wanted to be a priest. The artist spent seven years in a Catholic seminary boarding school while growing up in Northwest England, and though a career in the clergy wasn’t what Kenna was destined for, the discipline and reverence that he was surrounded with as a young boy are still legible in his photographs today.

Formally stunning and masterfully printed, Michael Kenna’s images present themselves with a simplicity that allows them to criss-cross over time and space. Each subject of Kenna’s lens, whether it be in France, Italy, Japan, or his own Northern England, is granted the same level of intense time and attention.

In general, Kenna’s images are exposed for an hour or more, completely erasing the presence of individual humans passing through, while the marks they make and the structures they build remain as defining features of the landscape. Through his brilliant compositional eye, the viewer is able to see straight through Kenna’s image-making process, literally. All that the viewer is left to interpret are the visual features of the landscape that captivated the photographer, with all other noise having been erased by strategic shutter speed.

There are few photographers working today who utilize minimalism and the compositional motif of the line so effectively as Michael Kenna, who drags the viewers' eyes up and down the crags of a city skyline with the same intensity as a gently sloping fence covered in winter snow. Through the simplification of man-made intervention on a landscape to that of an approachable line, or series of lines, Michael Kenna has tapped into a universal sense of elegance that he has been stoking for almost three decades.

photo-eye Gallery Michael Kenna – Also On View Article by Alexandra Jo photo-eye Gallery currently has six of Kenna’s photographs on display, as a companion to Aeroglyphs & Other Nocturnes. The delicacy of Kenna’s unique photographic sensibility is particularly apparent. His atmospheric images present the world through a captivating perspective that offers both mystery and stillness.

Across his extensive career, Michael Kenna’s photographs contain a precise balance between the ethereal and corporeal. Through his subtle manipulation of relationships between airy white and rich black tones, his work embodies unexpected visual contrasts that lay just this side of the surreal. These subtle variations on light and darkness bring a particular harmony to his tranquil compositions. There is an open quality to the work that never feels too heavy or dark, though the images are believably tangible. The meditative lens through which Kenna looks at the world feels consistent, elegant, and profoundly calm in the visual language of his photography.

Michael Kenna, Swan Song, Prague, Czech Republic, 1990, Silver Gelatin Print, 8 x 8 inches, Edition of 40, $3,000

In a quote from the forthcoming Des Oiseaux, Kenna states “In all my work, there is an underlying theme of memory, time, change, atmospheres that seem related to place." This idea speaks to that consistency of vision. Regardless of subject, Kenna’s photographs feel tied to a place, the particular light, the angle of a roof, or the curve of a branch; the singular feeling of one moment in one particular space. Kenna rarely photographs people, but instead looks for serene places in the world that the viewer can inhabit vicariously through viewing the images.

Michael Kenna, Four Birds, St. Nazaire, France, 2000, Silver Gelatin Print, 8 x8  inches, Edition of 40, $3,500

photo-eye Gallery currently has six of Kenna’s photographs on display, as a companion to Reuben Wu’s solo exhibition, Aeroglyphs & Other Nocturnes. Wu’s saturated, sci-fi neon color palate in his photographs of monumental landscapes and Kenna’s contemplative black and white images of more intimate natural spaces offer two very different ways to see and document spaces and moments in time. However, the contrasting works complement one another,— bright vs. soft, bold vs. subtle. The delicacy of Kenna’s unique photographic sensibility becomes particularly apparent. His atmospheric images present the world through a captivating perspective that offers both mystery and stillness.

Midday Sun, Roccascalegna Castle, Abruzzo, Italy Toned Gelatin-Silver Print 8x8" Image, Edition of 25 – Michael Kenna
photo-eye Gallery is thrilled to introduce new work by represented artist Michael Kenna. Released in conjunction with a major museum exhibition in Loreto Aprutino, Italy and a monograph from Nazraeli Press, Kenna's Abruzzo exclusively features transformative dream-like imagery from the Italian South. Kenna's publisher Nazraeli describes the series:
Abruzzo, located in southern Italy, is known as the ‘green region of Europe’ because of the system of parks and nature reserves covering more than one-third of its territory. It has one of the highest biodiversity indexes in Europe, and one of the richest areas of flora in the world.
In Abruzzo, Michael Kenna found a cultural identity that elsewhere, for the most part, has been lost to globalization and instant communication. Kenna photographed medieval ruins, ancient villages and a countryside rich in traditional cultivation. As curator Vincenzo de Pompeis writes in the book’s introduction, “Abruzzo’s heritage, together with its impressive natural scenery, brings to mind romantic connotations that have historically attracted many international landscape artists, particularly in the 19th century. Michael Kenna fits perfectly into this rich historical vein of celebrated landscape artists who have worked in Abruzzo. Kenna’s work often evokes the influences of Romanticism. In his photographs of historic rural landscapes, for example, there is an air of melancholy, which accompanies memories from the past. His images of ruins stir up feelings of passing time, of the constantly evolving ties between history and nature.”

Anne Kelly

I rarely stumble on a Kenna photograph that I don’t like. Sometimes, however, certain images will stand out, and it can be hard to articulate exactly why that is. Over the years, I have noticed that I tend to instinctually pause a bit longer when viewing images that I favor. On a more conscious level, I gravitate towards images that possess a bit of mystery — while simultaneously offering a sense of déjà vu.

Kenna photographs both the natural and man-made world with the same grace — a singular vision. He depicts the industrial landscape with the same reverence as a snow-covered tree in the forest.

From our current exhibition, I selected two images:

Ponti di Spagna, Bondeno, Ferrara, Italy, 2018

In this carefully composed image, we see a single tree on the edge of a river, six birds are in motion — and the fog causes the river and sky to become one. On closer inspection, we see a subtle ring of water in the river — as though someone has just skipped a rock or perhaps one of the birds swooped down to take a drink. The photograph could have been composed a hundred years ago — or today, but it transports me to “now”.

Many of Kenna’s photographs are multiple-hour exposures. While making the exposure Michael patiently enjoys taking in the world around him. The evidence is the photograph.

Night Power Station, Pila, Porto Tolle, Rovigo, Italy, 2018

I have always appreciated Kenna’s ability to approach industrial landscapes and the natural world with the same method. It appears that he addresses both with equal wonder and reverence. As a young boy, Michael spent quite a bit of time exploring the industrial landscape of northwest England — and it is clear to me that he hasn’t lost the sense of child-like wonder.

In his adult years, Ford River Rouge, an industrial complex outside of Detroit, Michigan, and Ratcliffe Power Station in Nottinghamshire, England are two locations that Kenna has photographed extensively. This image is a bit different in that the river and absence of daylight become such a large part of the composition. The star trails in the sky and man-made light sources bring the power station to life.

The work of Michael Kenna is magical and of admirable beauty. His images often transport me into an oasis of calm and solitude, reflection and imagination. To observe the world through his oneiric and evocative photographs is to enjoy an everlasting present.

My favorite images from the current exhibition are the following:

Tunnel of Poplars is a domesticated landscape where human presence is noticeable through its absence. A seemingly endless succession of trees flank an empty road. Like natural architectural lines organized in gradual shades of gray, the trees engage my gaze in a perpetual exercise of back-and-forth, an infinite loop. In this image, I enjoy the imaginary long walks I take along its placid path.

River Po Headwaters, Pian del Re, Crissolo, Cuneo, Italy. 2019

Michael Kenna, River Po Headwaters, Pian del Re, Crissolo, Cuneo, Italy, 2019, gelatin-silver print, 8" x 8", edition of 25, $3000

In River Po Headwaters, the river reads like a calligraphy mark, or the brushstroke in an abstract expressionist painting. Kenna's ability to draw out the essence of the space is mesmerizing. The long exposure in this image has made the snow blinding and the undulating river black. By blurring the details and creating a dramatic contrast between the elements, Kenna offers us a suggestive space away from the chaotic details of every day living. In this photograph, I like to follow the river up the mountain and imagine discovering its source.
