Calcified Reflected Flamingo, Lake Natron 2010 -- Nick Brandt |
Nick Brandt's calcified animal photographs have been making the rounds on the internet over the past few days, featured on Huffington Post, CBS News, ABC News, Mother Nature Network, The Verge, Co.Create, and many more, also inspiring articles on the nature of the alkaline Lake Natron that created these stunning creatures -- Boing Boing has a great article on the fish who have managed to make this inhospitable lake their home. The excitement started with the New Scientist article on Brandt's photographs and the lake, which explains that the lake's temperatures can reach 60 °C with a pH between 9 and 10.5. While many of the posts rehash the information in the New Scientist, NBC News, Las Vegas Guardian Express and Smithsonian.com add to the conversation.
Brandt's work is currently on view at photo-eye Gallery in Santa Fe. The show will be open through November. Nick Brandt discussed his new work with photo-eye Blog in November of 2011. Read the post here.
The images are also available in Brandt's newest book Across the Ravaged Land, which can be purchased here.
