The last time I interviewed Jamey Stillings was just after the completion of his impressive long term project, The Bridge at Hoover Dam. Images from this award winning series have been featured in quite a few publications including The New York Times Magazine Blog, Newsweek Japan, and Smithsonian among others — and have been published in the form of a fine art book from Nazraeli Press. Images from The Bridge at Hoover Dam have also been widely exhibited and acquired by several institutions including Library of Congress, Nevada Museum of Art and Museum of Fine Arts, Houston as well as private collections.

The Bridge at Hoover Dam was instrumental in inspiring Stillings' next, equally impressive project, The Evolution of Ivanpah Solar. In this new project Stillings records the construction of Ivanpah Solar, which is now the world’s largest concentrated solar thermal power plant. With the eye of an artist, Stillings photographed the landscape as it was transformed by the installation of 347,000 mirrors (173,500 heliostats) and other structures. This new project has already received a tremendous amount of attention, winning first place in the 2013 International Photography Awards (Editorial Environmental Professional category) and appearing in publications such as The New York Times, NPR, B&W Magazine, Newsweek Japan, Time and Wired, among others.

In honor of the completion of this new project I have asked Stillings tell us how the bridge project led him to the Mojave desert — and other recent events. —Anne Kelly

photo-eye Gallery is proud to report that Jamey Stillings' The Evolution of Ivanpah Solar has been selected as part of the 2016 FOTOFEST Biennial exhibition CHANGING CIRCUMSTANCES: Looking at the Future of the Planet. More than 20 works from Stillings' project examining the construction of the Ivanpah solar farm in California's Mojave Desert will be on view during the six-week festival. The exhibition contains five of Stillings' striking 44x64" black-and-white prints, and one custom-made 60x87" print produced at the request of the director of FOTOFEST (image above). Stillings was excited to print on a grand scale, saying " ...it's a challenge at that size, but we worked hard to make sure [the print] looked beautiful. I think the scale works well with the imagery, and the piece is just right for this exhibition — drawing the audience in." CHANGING CIRCUMSTANCES is currently on view in Houston, TX through April 24th.

Stillings’ photographs of the new bridge surmounting Hoover Dam, and the 2011 Nazraeli book featuring them, left me underwhelmed. Drama dominates; the landscape, the construction, the oversized geometry and scale of the thing, and the book reflecting it all, seemed at once too grand and too simplistic. No offense intended, Jamey Stillings, but the images seem kind of “can’t miss;” certainly not easy to make, given the multitude of angles, points of view, and varying lighting conditions over a two-year period, but easy to grasp.

Ivanpah Solar Electric Generating System, is a massive, nearly 400 Megawatt, solar thermal electric generation system designed to power over 140,000 homes across Southern California. From its ground breaking in 2009, the project has created quite a footprint in the southwestern desert. Photographed from the air deep in the Mojave Desert of California, Stillings' photographs of the Ivanpah Solar Electric Generating System draw in sharp relief the organic patterns of nature and how we as humankind mark and mar the landscape. To coincide with the release, photo-eye asked Stillings to tell us a little bit more about this massive undertaking.

"I have always been fascinated by the visual energy and tension produced at the intersections of nature and human activity. Uniquely as a species, and on a global scale, we consciously modify and use the environment for our perceived needs or enjoyment. Sometimes we consider the consequences of our actions. Frequently, we focus myopically on the short-term utility of land and resource use.

"I believe that creation of renewable energy projects, on both micro and macro levels, is essential to our civilization's long-term survival. It has been interesting to learn that the issues surrounding large-scale renewable energy projects are as complex as any other type of power or resource development. A multitude of environmental, economic, political and social choices need to be worked out, often by people and organizations that are theoretically on the "same" side.

"With this in mind, I enter the air in a small helicopter, camera mounted firmly to a gyroscope. On one level, I am observing intently, consciously and subconsciously, the interplay of natural and manmade forms as the Ivanpah Solar Electric Generating System (Ivanpah Solar) takes shape in the Mojave Desert. The dance is magical. Vein-like gullies move down a huge alluvial fan to reveal the periodic erosion of desert storms. In counterpoint, laser-sighted fence lines, geometric berms formed by large earthmovers, and thousands of heliostats (mirrors) organize the landscape for a chance to harness the sun's energy and create electricity for a few decades.

"One part creative indulgence, one part practical observation! The interplay of forms provides its own seduction. Enough that I might be content to operate solely on this level! However, my practical side wants to share this transformation to stimulate a broader conversation. If we can comprehend just what creation of large-scale renewable energy projects entail, we can better evaluate and discuss the often-difficult choices and compromises necessary to see it become reality.

"I invite you to give yourself permission to interact with these photographs on multiple levels. Let them be free expressions of form and line, but may they also provoke you to consider the constructive options we face as we mark the land for ourselves and future generation." -- Jamey Stillings

Jamey Stillings The Evolution of Ivanpah Solar received 1st Place in IPA's Monograph category as well as taking home the overall Best Book honors for 2016. In 2010, Jamey Stillings began a three-and-a-half-year aerial survey of the complete construction of the Ivanpah Solar Electric Generating System, the world’s largest concentrated solar power plant producing 392 megawatts of electricity on 14 square kilometers of public land. Stillings’ photographs explore the transformative interactions between raw natural forms and the project’s precise geometric lines, visually stunning with hundreds of thousands of mirrors reflecting across the stark beauty of the Mojave Desert.

Mitch Dobrowner’s dramatic and sublime STORMS series received a 1st place finish in IPA’s Fine Art Landscape category. In 2009 Mitch Dobrowner actively started seeking out tempests and twisters in the company of professional storm chasers, and since that time, storm chasing has evolved into a passion for the photographer.

Two weeks ago TIME magazine's LIGHTBOX photoblog features the work of Jamey Stillings and his project The Evolution of Ivanpah Solar. Olivier Laurent's featurette doesn't dig in to the details of the project, but does succinctly describe Stillings' impetus for photographing renewable energy, and the importance of documenting large public works projects. The article does exhibit 13 outstanding images by Stillings, including a few stunning color images of the Crescent Dunes Solar Plant near Tonopah, Nevada and the Desert Sunlight Solar Farm in the Mojave Desert.

In an effort to give prominence to some of the great little photobooks on the shelves at photo-eye, I've been writing about photobooks under $30 for the last few months. The first, second and third installments of this series can be found on the photo-eye Blog with some titles still available. Gibson and solar images by film and video artist Sharon Harper.

Known in the fine art world for his images of The Bridge at Hoover Dam, Jamey Stillings has just embarked on a new project – Evolution of Ivanpah Solar. Ivanpah Solar power plant will be the world's largest concentrated solar thermal power plant. In late 2010, Stillings initiated his first aerial survey of Ivanpah Solar, which he plans to continue through 2013. Much like Stillings' photographs of The Bridge At Hoover Dam, Stillings observes the construction site with the eye of an artist recording manmade structures, patterns and lines within the natural landscape. Photographs from this new project have already been published in The New York Times Magazine. Photographs from The Bridge at Hoover Dam have been widely exhibited and published in numerous publications such as Newsweek Japan, New York Times Magazine, LA Times and in 2011 Nazraeli Press published Stillings' first trade edition book, The Bridge at Hoover. Stillings holds a BA from Willamette University and an MFA from the Rochester Institute of Technology. He was a finalist in Photolucidaʼs 2010 Critical Mass Top 50, and was recognized with CENTERʼs 2010 Directorʼs Choice Award and the 2010 International Photography Award, Architecture: Bridges.

Linda Connor

Linda Connor is recognized for her imagery of the ancient and sacred. Included in this exhibition will be historical images of solar eclipses drawn from the archive of the Link Observatory in San Francisco and printed by Connor with the observatoryʼs permission.

The prints, which were made from their original glass plate negatives, were made by a variety of important photographers including E.E. Barnard. Printed on a gold toned, discontinued printing out paper, these images are extremely rare. The images inspire contemplation of both the spiritual and the scientific; the real and the unknown.

Connor is the recipient of three National Endowment for the Arts grants and a Guggenheim fellowship. Her work can be found in the collections of Art Institute of Chicago, Center for Creative Photography, University of Arizona, Tucson, the J. Paul Getty Museum, Museum of Modern Art, New York, San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, and Victoria and Albert Museum, London. Linda Connor is also the president and founder of PhotoAlliance, a nonprofit organization that supports the understanding, appreciation and creation of contemporary photography.

David H. Gibson

David H. Gibson is primarily a self-taught photographer originally known for his panoramic landscapes of Texas and the Four Corners region. Solar will include a selection of Gibsonʼs sunrise studies from Eagles Nest Lake, NM. Though Gibson has photographed in a wide range of locations, Eagles Nest Lake is one that has really held his attention and kept him returning for over 20 years. Gibson likes to revisit specific locations to observe and record the subtle changes that occur over time – the effects of the weather, time of day versus the time in history that a place exists.

"Over time conditions change and the water level in the lake rises and falls in conjunction with prolonged droughts or heavy snow melt. Plants in the fields around respond to these conditions. Some years the mornings have been too warm for the mists to form. It is always a surprise and a gift to be at Eagle Nest Lake before dawn to see what is presented." -David H. Gibson

Years of developing and refining his photographic technique have afforded him much recognition. Gibson has exhibited widely in both group and solo exhibitions, and his work is a part of several permanent public and corporate collections such as the Amon Carter Museum and the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston as well as the Exxon and AT&T collections. Gibson has published several trade edition and handmade books, including a handmade book of sunrise images from Eagles Nest Lake.

Sun/Moon (Trying to See through a Telescope), 2011 -- Sharon Harper

Sharon Harper

Sharon Harper uses photography and video to explore perceptions that we cannot experience without the camera. Solar will include a selection of her images of the sun from her project Sun/Moon. Harper's photographs draw on scientific and artistic uses of photography to illuminate existential concerns, embracing photographyʼs contradictory ability to verify empirical evidence and evoke fantastical possibilities.

Sharon Harper received her MFA from The School of Visual Arts, New York. Her work has been exhibited widely and is included in the public and private collections for The Museum of Modern Art, New York, Whitney Museum of American Art, New York, Nelson-Atkins Museum, Kansas City, among others. A new monograph of Harper's work, From Above and Below published by Radius books, will be released September of 2012.

Chris McCaw

Chris McCaw is a San Francisco based photographer who has established his career making unique photographic renderings of the sun. His process relies on an intense focusing of the light of the sun through his camera lens. The result, after several hours of exposure, is that of a polarized landscape (the negative reversed) scared by the laser-like mark of the sun. McCaw received his BFA from the Academy of Art in San Francisco. McCawʼs work has been exhibited widely and is held in the collections of The Metropolitan Museum of Art, NY, The George Eastman House, Rochester and The Museum of Fine Art, Houston. McCawʼs first book Sunburn, published by Candela Books, is due out this September.

Sarah -- Fritz Liedtke

Fritz Liedtke has recently been featured in a few publications, including and eight page article in the December issue of Professional Photographer Magazine, and also in the newest issue of LensWork Magazine, focusing on his Astra Velum series. The LensWork article includes an interview and 22-page in-depth look at the project. Liedtke’s work can also been seen in a few upcoming exhibitions. Opening at the Newspace Center for Photography on February 1st from 6-9pm, one of Liedtke’s sculptural books will be part of the exhibition Photography From the Edge. Currently in their Santa Barbara gallery and moving next month to their Seattle gallery, one of Liedtke’s images is featured in the New Directions 13: Beautiful My Desire show at WallSpace Gallery. The show also features work by photo-eye Gallery and Showcase artists Jamey Stillings and Aaron Blum, in addition a number of other artist.

Familiar Territory, #93, 2007 -- Jon Naiman

Photographer's Showcase artist Jon Naiman's Familiar Territory series has just been published in a book from Patrick Frey. Naiman's striking images of livestock inside the domestic spaces of the people who care for them are very well presented in this beautiful book, and it's been getting a good amount of press -- though all of it in German. Images from Rania Matar's L'Enfant-Femme are currently on view at Carroll and Sons Gallery in Boston through October 26th. Photographing young women from the United States and Matar’s native Lebanon, L'Enfant-Femme continues Matar's investigation into the psyche of the teenage girl, this time focusing on even younger women, girls on the cusp between childhood and their teenage years. Earlier this year Jamey Stillings came into photo-eye Gallery to show us his new body of work, Evolution of Ivanpah Solar, in which he documents the construction of the world's largest concentrated solar thermal power plant. Stillings' exploration of the power of the sun sparked an idea, and the Solar exhibition came to be.

The Solar exhibit includes a collection of photographic interpretations of the sun by photographers working in a variety of unique processes ranging from historic to contemporary techniques. Included are antique images of solar eclipses printed by Linda Connor from glass plate negatives drawn from the archive of the Link Observatory, and also the work of Alan Friedman who uses small telescopes, specialized filters and high speed streaming cameras to record the features of the sun. Sharon Harper's photographs draw on scientific and artistic uses of photography to illuminate existential concerns, embracing photography’s contradictory ability to verify empirical evidence and evoke fantastical possibilities. Photographer Chris McCaw builds his own large format cameras, places vintage silver gelatin paper into the film holder (instead of film) and leaves his lens open for an extended period of time. Because the lens is open for so long, the sun burns into the photographic paper, at times creating holes, and inverts the image from a negative to a positive, a process called solarization. Becky Ramotowski works in a similar, but different and equally unique manner. Ramotowski builds tiny pinhole cameras, which are left in the landscape from solstice to solstice. The result is a small paper negative that is scanned to create a (slightly) larger print that is a record the suns path over a six-month span. Time is also an element in David H. Gibson's sunrise studies of Eagles Nest Lake, a place he has been returning to for over twenty years to observe the subtle changes that can occur in a matter of monuments based on light, time and weather.

Family, 2008 -- Lydia Panas

Lydia Panas’ The Mark of Abel series will be on exhibit on May 11th through June 22nd at Eduard Planting Gallery in Amsterdam. Images from this series were recently published in a book from Kehrer Verlag and can be seen here. Asia -- Fritz Liedtke

Fritz Liedtke was recently awarded the Grand Prize in the B&W Alternative Photographic Processes competition by Rangefiner Magazine. The winning image Asia, is part of Liedtke’s Astra Velum series, the limited edition artist book of which was recently featured on our blog, as well as Lenscratch, and was also recently acquired by the Museum of Fine Arts, Huston. Liedtke's beautiful chin-colle photogravures are available as prints and also in a portfolio edition. More about the series and Liedtke's technique in creating the fine prints can be found here. Baobab, Tree of Generations #13, 2009 -- Elaine Ling

Work by Elaine Ling can be seen in several international shows, and is currently on view at the Kolga Photo Festival in Tbilisi, Georgia running through May 20th. Opening on May 8th, Lings work can also be seen in T.R.I.P. - Travel Routes in Photography which also includes work by Simon Norfolk, Giancarlo Ceraudo and Cristina de Middel. Located at Mercati e Foro di Traiano in Rome, the exhibition is open through September 9th. Finally, Ling will also be featured in issue 161 of Descant Magazine due out this Summer. Ling’s work on the Photographer’s Showcase Baobab, Tree of Generations, is a series of portraits of some of the world's oldest living organisms. Read the blog post on Ling's work here. Photographer's Showcase artist Jeff Rich will be giving a lecture about his Watershed series at the East Tennessee State University on Wednesday, November 28th at 6pm at Ball Hall Auditorium. Open to the public, the lecture will be followed by a Q&A and book signing. Opening December 7th, an exhibition of Rich's work will open at Newspace Center for Photography in Portland, OR, with a lecture and book signing on December 8th. His work is also currently on display at Pink Dog Creative in Asheville through December 15th.

Featuring images of the complex and beautiful structures of seeds, this project was also recently featured on the Huffington Post. Congratulations to photo-eye Gallery artist Jamey Stillings, whose book The Bridge At Hoover Dam published in 2011 by Nazraeli Press, has been honored with the 2013 Gold Quill Award by International Association of Business Communicators. "Designed to reflect the immense size and grandeur of the bridge itself, the oversized, hardcover monograph, features 60 museum-quality color photographs by renowned American photographer, Jamey Stillings. Along with Stillings’ breathtaking images, the book also includes essays by TYLI chief bridge engineer, David Goodyear, in which he describes the design process and engineering solutions developed for the iconic bridge," says the press release. From David Wolf's Nurturing Time series

Photographer's Showcase artist David Wolf will be exhibiting work from his Nurturing Time, Life in a Backyard Garden series at Corden|Potts Gallery in San Francisco on June 6th, 2013. This show will the first full-scale exhibition of this series that "envelop[es] the viewer in the garden environment." Wolf's work on the Photographer's Showcase is a series of architectural images that "delight in the sheer physicality of architecture... suggest[ing] its very impermanence" through undefined edges. The images are both eerie and beautiful, and can be seen on the Photographer's Showcase here.

Pueblo Fire, 1997 -- Tom Chambers

photo-eye Gallery artist Tom Chambers has recently been featured on Behold, the photo blog at slate.com. The article discusses Chambers' how his work is often inspired by his dreams, and the influence of travel and magical realism in his work. A number of images from Chambers' Ex Votos series, which can be seen here.
