Shinan by Michael Kenna $75
1,004 islands dot the waters of South West Korea making up the Shinan archipelago. The breathtakingly beautiful and pristine islands also known as "The Island of Angels" became a place of exploration for Kenna over the course of two years, resulting in the 62 images in this monograph. The images in Shinan show the interactions between land, water and sky in this remote location, captured in Kenna's unmistakable soft and meditative style that has made his work a favorite among photography lovers world wide. Published by Nazraeli Press, Shinan is printed on Japanese matte art paper using "Daido black" ink with tinted spot varnish. Part III of our Photobook Gift Guide -- read parts I, II and IV. Check back tomorrow for Part IV.  For more ideas check out last year's guide, which includes some classic books that have been reprinted and a few others still in stock.

Medic by Jennifer B Hudson - $40
Winner of the PhotoLucida book prize, Medic by Jennifer B Hudson was inspired during her own struggle with illness and pain when she was told "I wish there was a machine that could take the pain from your body and put it into mine." Medic combines the fantastic with the very real, pairing photographs of people interacting with strange contraptions with handwritten and typed accounts from people who have cared for loved ones during illness. While Hudson's carefully constructed and meticulously built scenes provide visually metaphoric expressions of illness and recovery, the texts fill in the emotional and personal gaps, making the book an intimate document of the difficult experiences that bind us and the love, helplessness and power that can come from them.

The Pencil of Nature by Manabu Miyazaki -- $46
Japanese photographer Manabu Miyazaki has spent decades capturing wildlife on film. Years of experimentation and design pair with keen observation of his subjects lead Miyazaki to carefully set up his cameras in the forest on trails used by both people and animals, the shutter to be triggered by the animals themselves. Miyazaki's results are breathtaking; perhaps no image sums up his effort better than the astonishing cover image of a black bear holding onto a tripod and gnawing on the camera. While none of the images in The Pencil of Nature rival the sheer spectacle of the cover image, Miyazaki's photographs are stunning regardless, presenting beautiful, surprising and often intimate portraits of Japan's wildlife. Taking it's name from the first commercial photobook ever published, The Pencil of Nature explores Miyazaki's techniques and the history of his image making as well as presenting a series of images made by wildlife, giving due to the precise hand that set up the frame.

Publish Your Photography Book by Darius D. Himes and Mary Virginia Swanson -- $29.95
Publish Your Photography Book is an essential text for any photographer considering entering the world of publishing.

"This is not necessarily a book to read cover-to-cover (although anyone who does read it sequentially will feel like they have gotten an education on the ins and outs of the publishing world), but is a reference book to keep close at hand and to dip into periodically as one needs, whether noodling with the first glimmer of a book concept and wondering where to start or looking to refresh your stale marketing ideas. While the focus of the book is on photography, much of what is written applies to the larger world of art book publishing." -- from the review by Mary Anne Redding

Guiding the reader through the entire process and filled with advice from a range of experts, it is sure to be a well-received resource for anyone approaching the photobook publishing endeavor.

Americans List -- Jason Eskenazi
Americans List — Jason Eskenazi — $13
Jason Eskenazi's The Americans List came out earlier this fall and has already become one of photo-eye's best sellers of the year. The Americans List is a companion to arguably the most influential photobook of all time -- The Americans by Robert Frank. While working as s security guard at the MET in New York during the exhibition of the Robert Frank Looking In exhibition, Eskenazi started asking photographers what their favorite image from the exhibition was and why. The project grew to include comments from 276 photographers like Mary Ellen Mark, Joel Meyerowitz, Jeffrey Ladd, Robert Frank, Martin Parr, Philip Perkis, David Alan Harvey, Bill Burke, Josef Koudelka, John Gossage, Juliana Beasley, Sara Terry, Mark Steinmetz, Vanessa Winship, Alec Soth and many more, and the resulting book is a fantastic new way in to Frank's seminal work in the context of contemporary photography. And at $13, the book is an easy addition to any photographic library.

History of Photography in Pen & Ink
Charles Woodard
History of Photography in Pen & ink — Charles Woodard — $12
The History of Photography in Pen & Ink is small enough to be a stocking stuffer, but is far more enjoyable than most other $12 similarly-sized items. The pocket sized book (subtitled 'Abridged Study Guide') is full of 43 pen & ink drawings of iconic images from the history of photography. Initially created as study aids for a survey course in photography, the illustrations are composed of stick figures and crude attempts at more complicated renderings. The illustrations are funny and surprisingly very recognizable, making guessing the images a bit of a game for the visually informed. It's a fun gift for anyone with a love of photographic history.

Pring's Photographer's MiscellanyRoger Pring
Pring’s Photographer’s Miscellany — Roger Pring — $12.99
Full of various tid-bits from the world of photography, Pring's Photographer's Miscellany is a combination of useful information and fun facts, short bios of influential photographers, the derivation of acronyms, quotations, and pieces of photographic history. Originally conceived as a digital book, the printed copy is a handsome pocket-sized volume printed on beautiful cream-color paper with small photographs and pen and ink illustrations on every page. The short and engaging snippets of information make the book hard to put down, but fortunately it also includes a bright green bookmark to save you place when you have to.

Photographs Not Taken -- Will Steacy
Photographs Not Taken — Will Steacy — $14.95
Starting as a fascinating blog, Photographs Not Taken, edited by Will Steacy, is a collection of essays from 62 photographers about the images they didn't make. "The essays all describe what Steacy calls the 'mental negatives,' or images that only exist in photographer’s memory or mind – the ones that got away. Reading through the essays, one is immediately struck by the reoccurrence of various themes – the camera is out of reach or out of film; the dilemma of capturing or experiencing a moment; the ethical decisions of helping, bearing witness or simply refusing to raise the camera in difficult moments; and pictures that simply escaped because the photographer was caught in the moment." From the review by Adam Bell. Photographs Not Take is an important volume for photographers and those who study or write about photography. Both fun and thought provoking, the essays touch on important ethical and philosophical issues relating to photography, and also tell a number of really great stories.
