Amidst the captivating ensemble of five images, one has deeply stirred my senses — The Next Big Adventure. This spellbinding tableau unveils a scene that is both curious and magical, inviting us to lose ourselves in its intricate tapestry of history and fantasy.

A young boy stands within an era-defying tableau. By his side, a canine companion adorned in whimsical 17th-century attire forms a charming pairing, sparking intrigue and igniting the imagination.

The foreground is dominated by a platform lavishly adorned in resplendent jacquard fabric, a touch of opulence that underlines the scene's grandeur. Upon this platform, his regal companion takes his seat. Yet, what truly captures the essence of this mesmerizing artwork is the juxtaposition it presents — an old wooden boat rests on one side of the platform, while the other is graced by the presence of the charming duo that stares back at the viewer. The interplay between past and present, of reality and the ethereal, infuse the piece with layers of meaning waiting to be unraveled.

As your gaze ventures beyond this intriguing tableau, the background unfolds a dreamlike tapestry reminiscent of a 17th-century masterpiece. Graceful sailboats adorn the bay, evoking a sense of timeless beauty, while a surreal and whimsical sky unfurls - a canvas of stars and a moon borrowed from the realm of dreams transport us. It's as though we're peering into a portal, catching a glimpse of the boy's very own fantasy world.

But what anchors us firmly in this captivating scene are the vibrant, red-tinted goggles, worn by both the boy and his four-legged companion. A visual thread connecting past and present, these goggles draw us back to the ornate tapestry in the foreground, weaving the elements of the image into a harmonious whole.

As you venture deeper into this collection of new images, each image will unravel another layer of Maggie Taylor's enigmatic vision, inviting you to wander through a landscape where reality and imagination entwine.

photo-eye Gallery is pleased to share new work by represented artist Maggie Taylor!

With her signature surreal style and intricate details, Maggie Taylor is known for creating digital collages that transport viewers to a fantastical world full of strange creatures, dreamlike landscapes and unexpected juxtapositions.

One thing that sets Taylor's work apart is her progressive use of technology to enhance and transform her source materials. One particular tool Taylor has been experimenting with recently is Midjourney, a deep-learning platform specializing in image processing and manipulation. Earlier this year, Gallery Director Anne Kelly asked the artist to share her insights into how she incorporates AI into her creative process.
"When I photograph in the real world I am reacting to things that I see (clouds, art, textures, objects) and collect them with my cell phone camera. Using Midjourney I feel like a set designer or a film director coming up with a concept and trying to articulate it in such a way that it comes to fruition. Then, if I like something that is generated, I collect it – downloading it to a folder on my computer instead of clicking the shutter on my camera... most of the AI elements I have put into my work are either portions of backgrounds or smaller items within the overall image."

Maggie Taylor, Invitation to a Dream, 2022, Archival Pigment Print, 15x15", Edition of 15, $3,200

With great pleasure, photo-eye Gallery is delighted to introduce the latest collection of work by renowned artist Maggie Taylor, showcasing her unique style of photomontage!

So sit back, relax, and allow yourself to be transported to the whimsical universe of Maggie Taylor...

Maggie Taylor, The Listening Room, 2022, Archival Pigment Print, 8x8", Edition of 15, $1,700

Maggie Taylor is a contemporary artist who explores the intersection of reality and imagination through her unique digital collages. As an innovative artist and early adopter of Adobe Photoshop, Taylor has taken her art to a new level by incorporating the latest technology into her works, combining elements made using the AI program, Midjourney with her traditional practice that blends vintage photographs and collected elements to create dreamlike scenes.

By using Midjourney, Taylor is able to bring her creative visions to life in a new way and the results are stunning. This group of images features an array of surreal and imaginative scenes, with intricate details and a rich color palette, each one more captivating than the last. These images are also a testament to the power of the artist in collaboration with AI and its ability to enhance the art world in new and exciting ways.

Anne Kelly, photo-eye's Gallery Director, queried Maggie Taylor about her utilization of AI programs in her artistic process. Given that Taylor was a Photoshop pioneer, Anne wanted to understand her thoughts on AI and how it compares to the early days of Photoshop.
I took a look at using the AI program Dall–E last summer. I love the idea of using language to generate imagery, so I was excited to try it out. Crafting the text that will create the image you envision is really difficult. Most of the time you get results that either disappoint or surprise you— and that can be a good thing. I always leave a lot of room in my working process for accidental encounters with the image. I do not start with a preconceived plan of what the finished image is going to be. So, working with some elements created by AI seems like a natural fit to me.

Initially, my biggest concern with the program was the small size of the images that the AI programs generate. I did not see that the quality of the images would be any better than a sketch of an idea for my work. Later on, last fall, I found out about Midjourney and started to create some images from text prompts with that program. I then have to use another program to upscale the images. Then in Photoshop, I use a lot of other layers and elements to build up the image. My newest four images all have at least one AI element in them. The image The Listening Room has quite a few things from different AI images.

When I photograph in the real world I am reacting to things that I see (clouds, art, textures, objects) and collect them with my cell phone camera. Using Midjourney I feel like a set designer or a film director coming up with a concept and trying to articulate it in such a way that it comes to fruition. Then, if I like something that is generated, I collect it– downloading it to a folder on my computer instead of clicking the shutter on my camera.

Most of the AI elements I have put into my work are either portions of backgrounds or smaller items within the overall image. They are often semi-transparent so that other colors and textures are also visible on them or under them. It is kind of like building a doll house or a stage set and finding some of the items you need from different sources.

In the early days of Photoshop, there was quite a bit of resistance on the part of galleries and collectors to the idea that a computer could be involved in the artist's process. I suppose AI is meeting even more resistance– and in some cases for good reason. issues of copyright, originality, and ownership are popping up all the time. It will be very interesting to see what transpires in the next 10 years with AI on so many fronts.

Also in the earlier versions of Photoshop, there was not the fine–tuned control that there is today, and most computers did not have the capacity to produce huge images. The quality of the AI images is getting better with each new iteration of the technology.

Chaco Terada, Little Fox, Sumi Ink on Silk, 10x7.5", Unique print, $1800

Greetings!

It's hard to believe that this year is ending, I think about the time in my life when "time" felt eternal. Now, as each year passes, I find myself working harder to hang onto the threads of each passing day.

I started at photo-eye Gallery six months ago, and while I've been fortunate to have worked with photographs most of my career, it has been a joy to have the opportunity to collaborate with our artists — I admire each of them for their exceptional ability to capture a sense of reality shaped by their perspective eye and mind. So much beautiful work has come to us this past year and I'm excited to share new work by artists Beth Moon, Vanessa Marsh, and Maggie Taylor in the new year — I will also be introducing a few new artists.

As the year comes to a close, our gallery staff is reflecting on some of our favorite artworks and highlights from 2022. The year began with an exhibition of Linda Connor and Pentti Sammallahti's work, a photo-eye Conversation between Anne Kelly and Brad Wilson, and an online exhibition of Beth Moon's portfolio of Baobabs. Spring and Summer brought us the beautiful exhibition of Platinum Florals by Beth Moon and James Pitts, new portfolios from Zoë Zimmerman, Siri Kaur, Tony Chirinos, and Keith Carter, Reuben Wu was featured on the cover of the August issue of National Geographic, and the exhibition Internal Logic by Maggie Taylor. In the Fall, Chaco Terada and David H. Gibson made their annual visit, giving gallery staff a day full of new work to admire. In this blog, you'll find work that has brought us beauty, inspiration and solace that range from interviews with artists to photographs, and exhibitions.

We hope you enjoy viewing our selections and are looking forward to what the next year brings.

Wishing you all a happy and healthy end to the year!

Maggie Taylor’s vivid photomontages are awash with whimsy, story and symbolism. In this month’s Gallery Favorites segment we each chose one image from Taylor’s exhibition Internal Logic that personally speaks to each of us, and detail what we find intriguing and delightful about each work. For this post, we are pleased to have Maggie share her favorite as well.

We hope you enjoy viewing our favorite prints from the exhibition, and please reach out if you have questions about any of the selected artworks — Maggie Taylor’s Internal Logic is currently on view in the photo-eye Gallery, and the newly signed monograph, and limited edition that includes a print, is available through our bookstore- HERE.

Anne Kelly selects If I Had a Boat

Portrait of Gallery Director
Anne Kelly
One of the challenges and joys of collecting photography is deciding which artists to collect, and which images by that artist to select. When it comes to prolific artists, such as Maggie Taylor, the image selection process may seem daunting. My advice is to let the process be fun and organic and not let it intimidate you.

My first rule of collecting is select images you love, even if you can't yet identify why. You will have plenty of time to discover what about the image spoke to you. If you are looking for a more conscious strategy, try making a selection that contains a visual element that you have a personal connection with. I believe that art and music, have the power to stir the imagination and assist in revisiting fond memories. Images that have that transformative power are, in my opinion, rewarding and joyful to live with.

In following my advice, the image that I have selected from our current exhibition is "If I had a Boat". When I was growing up, my grandparents lived on a lake and my grandmother owned a small butterfly sailboat. Some of my fondest memories are watching my grandmother sail, and, as I got older, taking sailing lessons. When I focus on this image, I am temporarily transported back to those carefree Summer days on the lake...the sun on my skin, water splashing, the smell of sunscreen, and perhaps even my grandmother's voice in the distance.

Maggie Taylor selects The Game

Maggie Taylor, The Game, 2021, Archival Pigment Print, 15x15", edition of 15, $3,200

As is normally the case, my personal favorite image is the one I most recently finished. “The Game” started with an intriguing pair of dogs, painted at different times by different artists. I added in a third character — a combination of a baby elephant skeleton I photographed at the Natural History Museum in Oxford, England, a few years ago and a small painting of Napoleon I found at an antique sale. Since there was no person to interact with these creatures, I added the woman who exists in a different dimension, but still has the ability to play with the dogs. Probably the most fun aspect of working on this image was exploring all the possible color palettes and outfits for each character.

Jovi Esquivel selects The Gathering

Maggie Taylor, The Gathering, 2021, Archival Pigment Print, 15x15", edition of 15, $3,200

Portrait of Gallery Associate
Jovi Esquivel
Within a cloud of aqua, a group of small boats carrying small animals, wearing paper crowns, circle a woman floating in a body of water; at the center of the photograph with her arms and hands open towards receiving, her soft, calm, gaze meets mine as I examine the fleet surrounding her.

Throughout history, the open palm has been associated with truth, honesty, and openness; in this image, I'd like to think of it as a surrender to a sense of wonder.

I grew up in Southern California, not in a coastal city, but the thirty-minute drive to my favorite beach made it an easy place to escape to. The view offered by HWY 1 (PCH), heading south toward the state park was the first gift of promise. Now, as a meditative practice, I try to recall as much detail as I can— the range of aqua between me and the horizon while I stand on the shore, the salty breeze, the shock from the touch of cold water that seems to wake every fiber in me. If you've been in the Pacific Ocean, you know it isn't an easy body of water to enter, but I've learned to respect its nature and in turn, it has taught me how to trust myself and follow my intuition. Submerging into its wildness reconnects my soul to my body.

The vivid colors found in Maggie Taylor's The Gathering reconnect me to the moments I have spent standing at my favorite shoreline, bracing myself physically to accept the gifts that come from surrender.

An early digital adopter, Maggie Taylor has been utilizing this technology to build her evocative and elaborate photomontages for over 20 years. These whimsical narratives often begin as pastel background drawings, with additional components such as 19th Century photographs, drawings, vintage toys, seashells, feathers, and taxidermy scanned and meticulously arranged over time to complete the scene. Working instinctively, Taylor crafts a surreal alternate reality with curious peculiarities, rich in symbolism.

Taylor's new book Internal Logic features insights into the shape and contours of her inspirations. Her deep archive of images is the lexicon through which she communicates her multi-layered imaginings. Each image contains the keys to understanding the corpus of other photographs.
