This week, photo-eye Gallery is ecstatic to premiere a brand new photo-eye Conversation between Gallery Director Anne Kelly and represented artist Brad Wilson!

We have been lucky enough to host a beautiful array of prints from Brad Wilson’s Affinity series in the gallery for the last two months as a part of his show, The Other World. This exhibition accompanies a stunning book by the same name that was published by Damiani Press in 2021.

Affinity is a body of work that has been in progress for over a decade and has always had the goal of communicating the individuality of the animals that Wilson is photographing. These portraits are not “standard” wildlife photography, and this is for a reason! They are shot at a higher resolution than a human eye can see, capturing every detail of these creatures. This supplies an amount of incredible detail that allows the viewer to feel closer to Brad Wilson’s animal subjects than would ever be possible in real life. The online exhibition of The Other World, built with VisualServer X, provides an opportunity for an even closer look as it lets the audience zoom in.

For me it’s about giving the viewer an experience that you’re not going to get looking at an animal off in a landscape somewhere, that you’re not going to get in a zoo. Being able to be that close gives you a sense of intimacy and connection that I find very powerful. That’s why I wanted it to be as detailed as it could possibly be.

Part of the challenge of this series is that you have to look beyond just how beautiful [these animals] are, how visually compelling they are, because there has to be something else in the photograph, some other level of connection. That's what I was looking for... some moments when they've calmed down, when they look more introspective, and that's what is compelling to me.

At photo-eye, the staff motto is short and simple. "At photo-eye, we're always learning!"

This mantra has felt particularly resonant as we have figured out the most effective ways to navigate the turbulence of the Covid-19 pandemic. How do you maintain a functional gallery when it isn't acceptable to let people inside? As a traditional fine art space, we have had to adapt how we think about and present photography in ways that feel both true to our mission and safe for our community.

Luckily, we had the tools at the ready as VisualServer X's online exhibition capabilities were further and further developed. Throughout the year, as things opened up, closed back down and opened up again, we harnessed both in-person and hybrid methods of showing work. The series of photo-eye Conversations, spearheaded by Gallery Director Anne Kelly, offered artists opportunities to share their current process with our audience; from learning about NFT's with Reuben Wu to hearing the tales of Mitch Dobrowner's storm-chasing exploits, sharing these videos was a way to bring a much-needed dose of creative excitement into all of our lives!

Our series of online shows that began in the fall of 2020 carried over throughout all of 2021, bringing us incredible collections of work from gallery artists such as Michael Kenna, Steve Fitch and Richard Tuschman. The fall then finally offered us an opportunity to share work at an official (and masked!) opening with Brad Wilson's The Other World.

The Other World

The Other World, featuring prints from Brad Wilson's Affinity series is both an online and physical exhibition in celebration of Wilson's title, The Other World: Animal Portraits from Damiani Press. For this show, which officially opened on November 20, 2021, we were able to have people in the space to view these stunning animal portraits in real life. This body of work is focused on an "authentic" encounter between the artist and animal, with the goal of bridging the inevitable interspecies divide.

Recent Works, 2019-2020

In September of 2021, we were lucky to install some recent work from gallery artist Maggie Taylor! Though this exhibition wasn't able to have a "formal" opening, these images are indicative of Taylor's signature complex and painterly style. Working intuitively, the allegorical compositions provided plenty of food for thought. Whether about issues around climate change, feminism or teamwork, Maggie Taylor approaches each and every picture with a delicacy and cleverness that set her apart from her peers.

The Other World: Animal Portraits, published through Damiani Publishers in Italy, showcases images from Wilson’s well-known Affinity series. Animal subjects practically jump off of the page in luminous detail, with each individuating trait articulated with a sharpness that usually feels reserved for the world  of high fashion. Wilson’s technical eye and artistic sensitivity allows for the viewer to have a direct confrontation with the beauty contained within every bird, cat, animal and reptile that he photographs. Through the lens of the endangered, the artist attempts to achieve the ultimate goal of bridging the interspecies divide.

The Other World: Animal Portraits presents Brad Wilson’s beautiful, vivid wildlife portraits in lush color across full landscape spreads. Photographed on location in wildlife sanctuaries and conservancies, Brad Wilson’s emotive portraits showcase the singularity of each of his animal subjects in the small details that make them who they are. Wilson worked with animal handlers in sessions ranging anywhere from 1-4hrs (sometimes longer), most of which were comprised of waiting for the animals to present themselves to him. This method of photographing, which emphasizes an “authentic encounter” with the wildlife even in a modified studio setting, enables the audience to understand the relaxed, but incredibly powerful presence of each animal that Wilson captures.

Brad Wilson

Brad Wilson is a photographer based in Santa Fe, New Mexico. He studied studio art and art history at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill after which he moved to New York City where he eventually committed himself to working as a commercial photographer and ne artist full time. He has produced two other titles in addition to The Other World, those being Wildlife (2014) and Tiere for Der Kamera (2014) through Prestel Publishing. Wilson’s images were selected as the global face of the Microsoft Corporation from 2016-2020 and is included in the collections of the New Mexico Museum of Art and the Blake Collection as well.

Brad Wilson, King Penguin #2, Albuquerque, NM, 2019, archival pigment ink, edition of 15, $1500

Santa Fe-based photographer Brad Wilson captures the essence of wild animals in his series Affinity. From magnificent elephants to stunning owls, his images explore mankind’s relationship with animals. His photographs call attention to the beauty and uniqueness of each subject with the aid of soft studio lighting and a deep black backdrop.

The Albuquerque BioPark recently completed work on a new penguin exhibition building which contains a multi-story 75,000-gallon saltwater aquarium. Soon after it opened, I was allowed in to photograph the birds living there. It was a challenging project from the start—the penguins had to stay at 42 degrees or colder at all times and the only refrigerated space I could utilize was quite small—a mere 10 x 11 feet. Fortunately, my assistant and I were able to squeeze in all the studio lighting and my black background with just enough room left for me to sit on the floor.

The next step was waiting in the cold for the birds to come in—something they had to decide to do on their own. We were not allowed to encourage them in any way and we could not block their exit once they arrived. Very quickly an amusing (albeit frustrating) sequence began: the penguins would march in as a group, huddle together close to me moving their heads continuously, and then file out a few seconds later. I realized that finding a still moment for any kind of meaningful portrait was going to be an extremely difficult task.

Three species are represented in the BioPark exhibit: Gentoo, Macaroni, and King penguins. Only one of these ultimately participated in my shoot: the kings. The other birds just stayed in or around the water—and away from the photo set. Lucky for me, the king penguins are visually striking animals with strong, colorful markings which made them excellent photographic subjects. In the end, despite the chaos of the situation, there were a few calm moments that allowed me to capture the images shown here.

Bio:

Brad Wilson's early education in the visual arts began at The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill where he studied art history and studio art. From there he moved on to both the Maine and Santa Fe Photographic Workshops to focus exclusively on photography before settling in New York City. In New York, Brad worked with a number of notable photographers and then began his own career in the commercial and fine-art genres. His work has been widely published around the world, appearing in numerous advertising campaigns, magazines, annual reports, and music packages. His fine-art photographs are currently represented by Doinel Gallery in London, Surround Art Gallery in Moscow, Artistics Gallery in Paris, and PhotoEye Gallery in Santa Fe. His first book, Wild Life, was released by Prestel. After more than a decade in New York City, Brad moved to New Mexico where he continues his photography surrounded by the beauty and tranquility of the southwestern deserts.

Valentine’s Day is often lost in a sea of pre-written cards, heart-shaped boxes of chocolate and other merchandise schemes that claim to express the abstract idea of love and attraction we feel for those dear to us. The day can end up feeling like pressure to perform or to find the right gift—to say the right words. Over the years I’ve tried to embrace the holiday as an opportunity to pause and be grateful for those who love me and support me through all the joys and pains of my life. Maybe you have someone you share romantic love with, or maybe you come home to the beloved pup you rescued (so he could rescue you right back). Either way, you have love, even it’s the love you have for yourself.

Sometimes when these sorts of holidays come up we focus on what we don’t have instead of what we do have. Working with art and artists reminds me daily of how blessed we are as a human race that our lives lend themselves to creativity. It’s something we give to ourselves as a gift each time we participate in the perspectives and colorful interpretations of the world around us.

I’d like to share two artists who’ve really impacted me in my short time at the gallery. They remind me how much love is coursing through the veins of our planet.

Carla van de Puttelaar, Rembrandt Series, Archival Pigment Print, 18×12" Image, Edition of 8, Price Upon Request

In her book Adornments, Carla van de Puttelaar, a Dutch photographer, connects sensual depictions of flowers and trees with the faces and bodies of women. She focuses on the imperfections of the skin of things—the beauty to be seen in the lines and marks of time. The collection of her images are bound together with a recycled paper cover that feels somehow both rough and smooth, like skin. The thick pages are full of deeply colorful, sensual photographs of her subjects in varying stages of life and age. The book is heavy and large—the weight of it encapsulating her appreciation and intrigue with the figures she studies. Van de Puttelaar’s work is a tribute to women—real women with real bodies, who have real reservations about their vulnerability and who they’re allowed to be. This image from her Rembrandt series illustrates the quiet, often hesitant, openness she admires about women. When I think about how I want the women in my life, my daughter especially, to feel loved by me, this is how I imagine it: To be truly seen in all the ways and from all the angles as one would hold up a flower on a warm summer day with awe and appreciation.

The second artist whose work has brought tears to my eyes at times is Brad Wilson. The animals Wilson photographs are inhabitants of various sanctuaries who house these precious, endangered lives and redirect them into a close relationship with mankind. Wilson uses a portrait style format, getting so close that the reflection of him working can often be seen in their eyes. The result is a very intimate encounter with these creatures we long to know and be close to. What I love about Wilson’s work is how he can portray this lion, dangerous and unpredictable by design, as capable of great feeling and emotion. The lion has symbolized man for ages; as our country and culture strives towards redefining how strong, good men should behave toward the world around us, it’s important we allow for a bit of wild and untamed nature. While we cannot tolerate predatory behavior, we need to allow our boys and men to roar. It’s the balance and bay of masculine and feminine energy that makes our world so beautiful. I see in the wild eyes of Wilson’s lion a bit of sadness, of longing for understanding and respect—wanting to be seen and loved in all his power and might, and not feared. I give my boys, now 11 and 15, the space to be both gentle and strong for me and with me. As a single mom, they guard me like a lion and also look to me when they’re broken and sad like the cub who will always live inside them. This portrait of Wilson’s lion reminds me I both need to respect the strength of the men in my life, and know when to sink my hands into their hair, look in their eyes and assure them of that same strength.
